Leonardo DiCaprio Believes That Killers of the Flower Moon Is a ‘Masterpiece’
Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio thinks his upcoming collaboration with director Martin Scorsese, the Western crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon, is a “masterpiece” according to costume designer Jacqueline West. Speaking with Deadline, West, who has worked on such tentpole projects as The Revenant and Dune: Part One, revealed what DiCaprio said to her about the project, which will see DiCaprio team-up with Scorsese for the seventh time.
“I was talking to Leo about it. We had lunch before I came here. He said, ‘Jackie, I think we worked on a masterpiece’. I thought for Leo to say that, was something. He doesn’t say that lightly. He has been in the business since he was a little boy.”
Describing working with Oscar winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese as “the pinnacle,” West revealed that she has not seen Killers of the Flower Moon herself, but heaped praise on both the source material and the cast.
“It follows the book, and the book was totally captivating. The native cast was incredible and the acting, Lily Gladstone is incredible. The images were thrilling. It looks amazing. I watched it all being shot but I haven’t seen any of it.”
Directed by Martin Scorsese from a screenplay by Scorsese and Eric Roth, and based on the non-fiction book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann, Killers of the Flower Moon will explore the real-life murders which took place in the Osage Nation in the 1920s after oil was discovered on tribal land. The incident sparked a major FBI investigation directed by a 29-year-old J. Edgar Hoover and former Texas Ranger Tom White, who is set to be played by Breaking Bad and The Irishman star Jesse Plemons.
The Killers of the Flower Moon cast is stacked, and finds Leonardo DiCaprio starring as Ernest Burkhart, with Robert De Niro set to portray his uncle, the American cattleman and convicted murderer William Hale. The rest of the cast includes the likes of recent Oscar winner Brendan Fraser, Lily Gladstone, Tantoo Cardinal, Jack White, and John Lithgow.
Killers of the Flower Moon Continues The Brenaissance
Killers of the Flower Moon will continue what has been dubbed “The Brenaissance,” a resurgence in the career of beloved actor and star of The Mummy, Brendan Fraser. Now an Academy Award winner thanks to his lead performance in The Whale, Fraser joins DiCaprio, De Niro, and Plemons in Killers of the Flower Moon as lawyer W.S. Hamilton, with the actor recently revealing what it was like to see DiCaprio again after all these years.
“I think I had just been in School Ties or something then, and I was, like, flummoxed but I just wanted to tell him, Hear, hear,” he said. “That was incredible. And he repeated that to me. He remembered me. He said: ‘You were the only guy who didn’t treat me like a little kid. He volunteered that to me. That was meaningful.”
Killers of the Flower Moon will be distributed by Paramount Pictures and Apple TV+ and is expected to premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in May 2023.
